Additional Organ Systems

This course examines the group of organ systems (Lymphatic, Urinary and Reproductive) not addressed in previous BioScience courses. Students will explore the structure, function, physiology and pathophysiology of the organs belonging to each of these systems while also reviewing the scientific concepts underlying the functioning of these organs. Such topics include osmotic and hydrostatic pressure, electrolytes, acid-base balance, antigen-antibody interaction, and mitosis and meiosis. The applications of related biomedical research and technology, including infertility treatments, dialysis, vaccinations, and transplant and tissue rejection will be investigated along with the ethical issues that arise from these technologies. Traditional animal organ dissection will be supplemented with laboratory experiments and simulations, field trips to research and medical facilities, conversations with clinical and research professionals, as well as with individuals affected by disorders related to these organ systems.
