Energy Delivery Organ Systems

This course examines the group of organ systems (Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Digestive) that are collectively responsible for absorption and delivery of nutrients, both chemical and elemental, to all parts of the human body. The structure, function, physiology and pathophysiology of organs associates with these systems will be studied. Science concepts relevant to the functioning of these systems, such as nutrition, digestion, metabolism, fluid dynamics, electrical conduction, diffusion, pH and cellular respiration will be reviewed. Students will explore applications of current biomedical research and technology including pacemakers, ventilators, surgical instrumentation and diagnostic imaging, and investigate and discuss ethical issues related to these biomedical advances. Traditional animal organ dissection will be supplemented with laboratory experiments and simulations, field trips to research and medical facilities, conversations with clinical and research professionals, as well as with individuals affected by disorders related to these organ systems.
