Information Transmission Organ Systems

This course examines the group of organ systems (Nervous, Special Senses and Endocrine) that generally receives, transmits, coordinates and integrates information for the human body. The structure, function, physiology and pathophysiology of these systems and their associated organs will be studied. Related topics such as diffusion, active transport, polarization, conduction of sound waves, and transmission and refraction of light will be explored as they relate to the physiology of these organ systems. The existing and future applications of pertinent biomedical research will be discussed, in addition to relevant ethical issues, both from an individual and societal perspective. Traditional animal organ dissection will be supplemented with laboratory experiments and simulations, field trips to research and medical facilities, conversations with clinical and research professionals, as well as with individuals affected by disorders related to these organ systems.
